Almost one in five pupils in Munich leaves school without any qualification. A combination of problematic social conditions and a difficult job market means that at an early age these young people are denied any prospects of professional or personal development.
The “KOMM in die Zukunft” mentoring project was set up to support children who are determined to achieve more at school. It provides each young person with a mentor in the form of an adult who is already in employment. As part of the project, Knorr-Bremse volunteers have been assisting schoolchildren with job searches and applications and helping them prepare for interviews. The idea is either to get them into a job directly or to convince them of the value of school qualifications as a preparation for working life.
The project partner is the association Bürgertreff e.V., which was set up to support structurally weak urban districts in Munich and is responsible for running the mentoring project.
