Knorr-Bremse expands its remanufacturing portfolio

Knorr-Bremse is gradually expanding its range of remanufactured products. The latest additions to the original equipment manufacturer’s Genuine Remanufactured Program are calipers for SN6 and SK7 trailer disc brakes.

For older trailers in particular, these industrially reconditioned products, which offer less mileage, represent 100% OE manufacturer quality, providing a low-cost, safe alternative for value-based repairs. | © Knorr-Bremse

According to Wolfgang Krinner, Member of the Management Board of Knorr-Bremse Systeme für Nutzfahrzeuge GmbH: “The market is ripe for this step. The pressure to cut costs in the transport sector is immense. As a manufacturer of original equipment and genuine parts we are out to do more than just offer our customers cost-effective top quality for their new vehicles. We also aspire to offer them a low cost, safe alternative for their trucks and trailers that have already racked up high mileage.”

The brake caliper is one of the components in a commercial vehicle that is subjected to extreme forces. The caliper must be able to withstand such forces at all times – throughout its second life cycle as well.

As Wolfgang Krinner puts it: “This is where our expertise as an original equipment parts manufacturer really counts. We are familiar with the precise technical requirements for each individual part – which means we can test them very rigorously indeed. This way we ensure premium quality for second-life products.”

Remanufacturing generates low cost, safe products for value-based repairs of older vehicles and trailers, and also helps to protect the environment. In this process, the specialists at Knorr-Bremse do more than just replace all the seals and bolts. At the company’s own remanufacturing center in Liberec, Czechia, the used products are completely dismantled, cleaned by several different processes and remachined. All parts that cannot be reused are replaced by new original parts with precise specifications that, in many cases, are known only to Knorr-Bremse.

The production lines in Aldersbach, Germany, on which the reconditioned calipers are assembled are the same ones used to assemble new calipers. The final end-of-line inspections are identical to those for new parts. Dr. Daniel Köhler is responsible for remanufacturing at Knorr-Bremse: “In our tests we check more than 130 variables before we release the components for sale,” he says. “That means we offer precisely the OE quality that is rightly expected of us.” Remanufactured parts offer less mileage than new parts at lower cost, while at the same time helping to protect the environment. Despite all the work involved in terms of logistics, reconditioning, and quality control, remanufacturing still generates 70% less carbon dioxide than the production of comparable new parts.
