PNEUMATICS
Compressed air is the most important operating medium in any commercial vehicle braking system. Generated by the compressor, it is delivered via the air dryer and the multi-circuit protection valve to the compressed air reservoir, where it is stored.
When the vehicle brakes are applied, or the vehicle load changes, the compressed air is fed via control valves or modules to the brake actuators or the pneumatic suspension system at pressures that can be over 10 bar.
MECHANICS
The actual braking effect is achieved mechanically. Disc brakes manufactured by Knorr-Bremse weighing under 50 kg can at present apply a clamping force of 300 kN and produce a retardation of 900 kW.
The advantages of this technology have led to its increasing use in trucks, semi-trailer tractor units, buses and trailers.
